In Year 4 this term we have been learning lots about the Romans, such as their views on democracy and some of their inventions. We learned some very shocking facts! Did you know women weren’t allowed to vote in Roman times?! We couldn’t believe it! We have also been learning about the different inventions the Romans used and how we still use some of them to this day. Straight and paved roads were a Roman invention? Who would’ve thought!
We also looked at timelines and tried to organise them starting with the start of the Roman empire to it’s end. We couldn’t get over how long the Romans had been in power for, it was a very long time!
In science, we have started to look at human digestion and how we get nutrients from our food. We learned about the oesophagus, a small tube that carries food down into the stomach where it can be digested. We also learned that your small intestines can be nearly seven meters long! That’s about the size of the average saltwater crocodile!
In English, we have been focusing on writing warning stories with scary settings based on our class text ‘The Windmill on the Hill’. It’s been a lot of fun coming up with creative and scary locations. We’ve put a lot of effort into making them as descriptive as possible by using similes, show not tell and rules of three in our writing. They were tricky to learn at first but now it’s a piece of cake!
In French, we have been practicing and revising old learning such as the French names for animals and classroom instructions. We played a fun matching game with the whole class, trying to find the English translations for French words!
We were lucky enough to get to visit the new block of flats at the top of County Oak road, meeting with construction workers and getting a tour of the building. We thought the rooftop garden at the top was particularly cool! You could see for miles away.
We also got to take part in the school’s book fair, having a look at all the wonderful books on sale. We wanted to buy almost all of them and getting to sit and read some books to see if we liked them was really fun!
