Summer Term
What have we been learning?
This term we have been spending lots of time outside exploring and enjoying nature. We went on a trip to One Garden and had a wonderful time exploring the woods looking closely at the textures, patterns and colours you can find in nature. We used natural objects to build homes for woodland creatures and made our own creatures using clay, sticks and leaves. We collected petals to make prints on fabric and learnt a lot about the plants the grow in the Walled Garden.
We learnt about parts of a plant and identified plants in our school grounds. We planted seeds and watched them grow. We observed the weather and looked for signs of summer over the term.
We learnt about animal classification and sorted animals into mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish.
Spring term.
What have year one been learning?
We have enjoyed some special events this term in year one. We celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite characters, wrote poems inspired by Michael Rosen and had visit from the author Jim Beckett.
We celebrated Science week and were curious cats finding out new things. We worked as a team using our communication skills, like the dolphin, to draw a picture together, carried out a floating and sinking experiment and made nests for a bird using natural materials.
We found a box of dusty dinosaurs in the attic just like Harry and wrote a set of instructions teaching others how to wash them using ‘How to wash a Wooly Mammoth’ text as inspiration for our writing.
In maths we have been working on addition and have discovered that when you swap the addends the sum remains the same. We have also been exploring odd and even numbers.
Autumn term.
What have year one been learning?
We have just completed our topic on the Battle of Hastings. We learnt about castles and the human and physical features surrounding Lewes Castle. We found out about the different parts of a castle and built some of our own with towers, battlements and moats. We found out that William the Conqueror defeated Harold Godwinson during the battle and became the King of England in 1066.
In English we have learnt the story of Paddington and his journey across London. We went on a trip to the Sealife Centre. We showed the Carden value of safety when travelling on the bus and we learnt lots about the ocean and sea creatures. We then shared this experience through writing a senses poem and a recall of our day.
In Maths we have been problem solving and finding wholes and missing parts using resources to support our reasoning. We have partitioned numbers into two parts using part whole models and bar models.
