PHSE - life skills

Intent

At Carden Nursery and Primary School we recognise the importance of equipping our children with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their own lives now and in the future.

Our curriculum map is based on the DfE statutory guidance for Primary Relationships and Health Education and the PSHE Association Programme of Study. It supports schools to meet the duties in the Equality 2010 on promoting equality and challenging prejudice.

We teach respect and support children to gain a positive sense of self, to value diversity and promote equality.  Our aim is to empower children; giving them the confidence to make positive, informed decisions about their own personal wellbeing.  Together we identify ways to support ourselves, our peers and work together to generate a collective understanding of what it means to be a responsible, proactive member of a community.

Our PSHE/life skills lessons are purposeful, interactive and inclusive; designed to teach the fundamental building blocks and characteristics which cultivate positive personal attributes and virtues in our students.  Learning is tailored to ensure all pupils are able to access the curriculum in a way pertinent to their individual needs and understanding.  Each child’s stage of development, level of understanding, protected characteristics and family circumstances are considered when planning to ensure an inclusive curriculum is provided to all.

We underpin our taught curriculum in our daily practice through our whole school Core Values, Learning Journey skills, our weekly PSHE and celebration assemblies and our consistent expectation of respectful, considerate behaviour from staff and children alike.

Implementation

At Carden Nursery and Primary School, PSHE education is a central part of our curriculum as it enables our pupils to build positive, equal, consensual friendships and relationships and to develop skills to keep themselves and others healthy and safe now and in the future. The PSHE education curriculum supports personal development, behaviour for learning including promoting attributes such as kindness, respect, consent, resilience and self-efficacy.

Our curriculum is ambitious and designed to give all pupils the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life. It will provide opportunities to embed new knowledge and practise skills that can confidently be used in real life situations on and offline.  What we teach in the classroom will help our pupils’ foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values.

With this in mind, PSHE education isn’t just another school subject. It’s a chance to give every child and young person an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future.

This includes helping them to deal with critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change. Also, giving them a solid foundation for whatever challenging opportunities lie ahead, so they can face a world full of uncertainty, with hope.

We will be a learning environment tailored to every child, their individual needs and abilities and will enable them to develop to their full potential. Our Core Values of Respect, Kindness, Safety, Aspiration and Courage support our vision.

PSHE teaching and learning is strongly interwoven with our vision and values, through our PSHE curriculum we teach:

  • Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health and Wellbeing Education.
  • Economic Wellbeing and Personal Safety (including assessing and managing risk).
  • Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.

Our PSHE curriculum gives pupils the knowledge and skills to embrace our diverse community (a third of our pupils are non-white British). The curriculum promotes discussion and introduces new vocabulary. It also teaches children to have a deeper understanding of their own and others feelings and practises strategies to develop their resilience. The spiral curriculum means themes are revisited regularly, with understanding extended throughout the children’s time at school. Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils to develop metacognitive strategies through learning self-awareness, respecting and valuing difference and building confidence to be active in the decision making around their learning.

We follow the Brighton and Hove PSHE curriculum map which is based on the DfE statutory guidance for Primary Relationships and Health Education and the PSHE Association Programme of Study and supports schools to meet the duties in the Equality 2010 on promoting equality and challenging prejudice. The map outlines how we can cover the KS1 and KS2 learning outcomes and is grouped into topics some of which fit with SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning) themes.  The number of lessons needed to cover topics is based on one PSHE lesson per week.  Where there are Brighton and Hove PSHE Team resources provided for Brighton and Hove schools this is indicated on the map and these can be downloaded from BEEM.

Overview

This curriculum map is based on the DfE statutory guidance for Primary Relationships and Health Education and the PSHE Association Programme of Study and supports schools to meet the duties in the Equality 2010 on promoting equality and challenging prejudice. The map outlines how you can cover the KS1 & KS2 learning outcomes and is grouped into topics some of which fit with SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning) themes.

The B&H PSHE lesson for EYFS meet learning outcomes from the statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage: Personal, Social and emotional Development and the Development Matters Curriculum.

The number of lessons needed to cover topics is based on one PSHE lesson per week.  Where there are B&H PSHE Team resources provided for Brighton & Hove schools this is indicated on the map and these can be downloaded from BEEM https://www.beem.org.uk/

The order of PSHE topics has been planned around key events of the school year, for example new starts, Anti-Bullying and Equality Calendar events such Anti-bullying week, Black History, Gypsy Roma Traveller and LGBT History months.

Some sensitive topics, such as Loss and  RSHE are placed towards the end of a year when class relationships are more established. Schools may want to change the order of some topics to make the PSHE Curriculum bespoke to their school context. It may also be helpful to consider where the PSHE learning outcomes could be taught alongside related RE, science, DT (food) ,PE, geography, history & ICT(Online safety) as detailed in the DfE Statutory Guidance.
